BEHAVIORS AND EXPECTATIONS

At East Salem, students are responsible for making good choices and following the expectations and procedures that are set in place in all areas of the school:  classrooms, hallways, restrooms, lunchroom, playground, specials, and buses.  These expectations, clearly defined by our administration and teachers, are practiced daily and posted throughout our school.

CHARACTER COUNTS!

Each of The Six Pillar of Character traits are used within our CHARACTER COUNTS

program at East Salem to help instill a positive school climate and a culture of kindness, making our school a safe environment for students to learn.

         TRUSTWORTHINESS is:
         Being honest in communications and actions.  Being loyal and reliable.  Having the                     courage to do the right thing. Keeping your promises.  Not deceiving, cheating or                         stealing. 

         RESPECT is:
         Treating others with respect and following the Golden Rule.  Being tolerant of others                 and accepting differences. Using good manners.  Being considerate of the feelings of                 others.  Dealing peacefully with anger, insults, and disagreements.

         Using appropriate language.  Not threatening, hitting, or hurting others.

         RESPONSIBILITY is:
         Doing what you are supposed to do.  Planning ahead.  Being diligent.                                                 Persevering.  Doing your best.  Using self-control.  Being self-disciplined.  Thinking                       before you act. Being accountable for your words, actions and attitudes.  Setting a good           example for others.  Choosing a positive attitude.  Making healthy choices.

         FAIRNESS is:
         Playing by the rules. Taking turns and sharing.  Being open-minded.  Listening to others.           Treating others fairly.  Not taking advantage of others.  Not blaming others for your                   actions.

         CARING is:
         Being kind.  Being compassionate and showing you care.  Showing empathy.  

         Expressing gratitude.  Forgiving others and showing mercy.  Helping people in need.

         Being charitable.

         CITIZENSHIP is:
         Doing your share to make your home, school, community and greater world                                   better.  Cooperating.  Getting involved in community affairs. Staying informed. Being a             good neighbor.  Obeying rules and procedures.  Respecting authority.  Protecting the                 environment.  Volunteering.

SCHOOL HOURS

Our school day starts promptly at 7:40 a.m. and ends at 2:15 p.m.

TRANSPORTATION CHANGES

Changes in afternoon transportation must be received by the office no later than

1:30 p.m.  If you know about transportation changes in advance, please send a note with your child.

ABSENCES FOR HYBRID STUDENTS

Students should be in school every day unless they are sick or there is an unforeseen circumstance.  When a student is absent, it is the student's responsibility to check in CANVAS for their assignments.  Salem City Schools will be closely monitoring student attendance.  Please send a written excuse each time your child is absent.  Please call the office by 9:00 am to request make up work.

DRESS CODE

East Salem does enforce the Salem City Schools’ Dress Code. Please review and follow the dress code.

SUPPLIES

Students are responsibile for having their supplies every day.  Please refer to the Supply list.

DAILY FOLDER

Graded papers will be sent home in the student’s homework folders (former Tuesday folders) so you can see your child’s graded work in a more timely manner.  Some assignments are done in CANVAS, so we will not be sending home graded papers for these assignments. We will also send home important PTA notices and permission forms in this DAILY FOLDER. Please take the time to look at this folder. 

**We ask that students CLEAN out their Daily Folders each weekend and bring them back on Monday empty and ready for a new week.

AGENDAS

Agendas can be used daily to help students record their homework.  It is the student’s responsibility to ensure their homework is written down correctly and checked each day.  

HOMEWORK

Students will be expected to complete all online assignments and any assigned homework each day. We ask that students read 15-20 min. every day outside of school. 

PARENT PORTAL

PLEASE become familiar with Parent Portal. This resource will allow you to track your child’s grades so you can help them be successful and monitor their progress.  Please refer to the SCS Grading page.

CLASS DOJO 

All 5th Grade teachers use Class Dojo as a way to help reinforce positive behavior and increase student accountability. PLEASE JOIN CLASS DOJO.  If you need to communicate with one of the teachers, please use dojo or the school email.

CHROMEBOOK

It is the student's responsibility to charge their chromebook each day!  Students are expected to take care of and manage their chromebook appropriately.  

Inappropriate use of the chromebook will not be tolerated.

CELL PHONES AND SMART WATCHES

Students are not allowed to have cell phones and/or smart watches during school.

If your child chooses to bring these to school, they are to be kept off and in their

bookbags until they arrive home.  

WATER BOTTLES

Students can bring a water bottle and it can be refilled at stations in the hallways.

Bottles need to have secure and tight tops.  Only WATER is allowed!

TENNIS SHOES

Tennis shoes are required for PE and to play on the playground.

Both the school calendar and handbook can be found in the student agenda.
